Ulun Danu - Large and beautiful temple in North Bali

Bedugul is a highland area on the northernmost side of Tabanan Regency which is the center of Bali tourism. This area is known for its cool air, terraced rice fields, and three large lakes; namely Beratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan. Each of these lakes plays a vital role in people's lives, so they have a spiritually important position according to the Hindu teachings adhered to by the Balinese people. For this reason, in each of these lakes, there is a special temple called Pura Ulun Danu. One of the three temples which is considered to have the most important meaning and long history is Ulun Danu Beratan Temple.

Literally, "pura ulun danu" means temple on the lake and can be described as a temple that was founded as a place of worship for Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and the gods who care for a lake. Several manuscripts mention that Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is a place of worship for Sang Hyang Widhi in his role as the God of Prosperity. This temple also functions as a place of worship for the goddess who resides in Lake Beratan, namely Dewi Laksmi – who is the goddess of fertility and beauty. Apart from that, the existence of Lake Beratan as a water source for agricultural irrigation for the surrounding area makes it have the status of Kahyangan Jagat, namely a public temple where Hindus pray from all regions, groups and professions.

Until now, no definite source has been found that reveals the history of the founding of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. The only source found is Lontar Babad Mengwi. It explains that the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was founded by I Gusti Agung Putu around the Saka year 1556 or 1634 AD.

The function of Ulun Danu Temple as a place of worship is realized by the existence of several worship buildings/pelinggih. Between the shrines, there are two buildings – namely the Palebahan Pura Tengahing Segara and the Palebahan Mostgih Lingga Petak/Ulun Danu whose position juts out into the middle of the lake. The unique position of these two sacred buildings is rarely found in Ulun Danu temples built on other lakes in Bali. This makes the two sacred buildings in the middle of Lake Beratan not only have spiritual value but also high aesthetic value.

Apart from functioning as a place of worship for Hindus from many surrounding areas, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple has indeed become a center of attraction for tourism in Bedugul. The main attraction of this temple complex is none other than Pelinggih Telengin Segara which is in the form of an 11-seated meru and Pelinggih Lingga Ulun Danu which is in the form of a three-seated meru. The position and natural panoramic setting that surrounds these two sacred buildings make them have high aesthetic value to be immortalized.
